Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park 3,230 sq km (1,250 sq miles) is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park. It’s also the most accessible from Dar es Salaam 283 km (175 miles). With almost guaranteed wildlife sightings, it makes an ideal safari destination for those without much time. The Park is about three to four hours drive from Dar es Salaam, lying astride the highway to Zambia, en route to Ruaha and Udzungwa Mountains National Parks in Southern Tanzania.

Most visitors come to Mikumi National Park aiming to spot the ‘Big Five’ (cheetah, lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), and they are always not disappointed. The park is also dominated by flood plains and grasslands and rich in wildlife including giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, hippos, baboons, impala, leopard, warthog, eland, and the rare wild dogs. More than 400 bird species have been recorded, including a host of European migrants during the rainy season.
